Dear Parents,
Since Improving and enriching our current p[program is so important to all of us, Mrs. Kallenberg, Mrs. Arnett, and Mrs. Wade participated in an extensive 30 hour teaching program. The training focused not only on improving reading, writing, and spelling skills, but also taught us how to give the students necessary tools to achieve greater success in school and in life. Rather than having the students memorize lists from spelling workbook to store in their short term memories, we are incorporation a methodology called Orton-Gillingham, a technique to use with our already existing curriculum. It is a multi-sensory program that enables students, by direct instruction, to review, to learn new concepts, practice, and to apply to what they are learning. We will be conducting on-going assessments to monitor what they have mastered. Most importantly, they will acquire concepts that will be stored in their long-term memories. Quite Often students may study for weekly spelling tests and perhaps do very well, but when later asked to read or write a particular word from that test, they cannot apply the knowledge in context. For the benefit of all of our students, we are integrating this hands on multi-sensory program, that is systematic, structures, cumulative, and success-oriented. What will this look like? This means twice a day our students will be switching to the other 2nd grade classroom for instruction. Mrs. Kallenberg will be implementing this new program, and Ms. McKenna will continue to do the Journeys Reading series. This also means spelling Homework will change. Every week on this Blog, you will find the new list of Red Words for the week. Red words are non-phonetic words or sight words. These words will be on the practice test on Thursday and the actual test on Fridays. The rest of the words will be phonetic words, catered to whichever skill we are working on that week. 5 will be given to the students ahead of time and 5 will not. This will show whether or not the students is truly mastering that skill. There will no longer be spelling homework, but rather, we will be switching to cursive practice. Please expect a daily worksheet. I know this seems like a lot of changes but this program has been proven to show great improvements in students. We are very excited to get this going and greatly appreciate your support. Thank you! |
