"The things that we love tell us what we are." - St. Thomas Aquinas
I love my students!
I love our learning and the time we get to spend together.
Thank you for sending your artists, readers, scientists, mathematicians, singers, creators, writers, and gigglers to St. Christopher!

September's focus virtue was HOPE. In October, we will focus on the virtue of STUDIOUSNESS! St. Thomas Aquinas is our model saint for this month. The entire school colored pictures of St. Thomas Aquinas and read a special prayer together. Keep working hard second graders!
This week and moving into next week...
Religion: We discussed Jesus as the Savior of the world and what that really means. We understood that we would not be who or where we are without Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. We shared parables that we remembered from kindergarten and first grade and learned that story telling was a key part of Jesus’ life. Ask your child what it means for Jesus to be both human and divine – they should remember a hand motion to visualize the concept!
Next in Religion, we will be preparing to lead Mass on October 17th! We will also be wrapping up Unit 3 by discussing more of Jesus' parables and miracles.
Reading: We read Jellies and worked on contractions in spelling. Jellies is a nonfiction text and we compared the author’s facts and opinions within the story. We will be doing our weekly reading groups during the week of October 9-11, and taking our test on Friday, October 12. They're doing so well!
Math: We reviewed Chapter 2 and did a much better job on the test! Chapter 11 has all sorts of “angles” to it. We are looking at two-dimensional shape names, faces, edges, vertices, and angles. Chapter 11 will continue until our proposed test date of October 18th.
Science: ZOO TRIP!!! Woohoo! This is one of our favorite field trips! We have been continuing our research for our animal project. The students have answered questions about the basic needs of living things, their animal's physical characteristics, and discovered their animal's home. We will be answering more questions in our research packets and finding facts about the animal's diet, predators, life cycle, and much more!
Social Studies: We finished our Landform Booklet and began our next magazine on “Location.” This incorporates our knowledge of a compass rose – which will be reviewed again – and how to use different types of maps.

October 15-19
We had such a wonderful time at the zoo! Thank you chaperones and thank you everyone, for sending healthy, safe lunches!
They were troopers!
Religion: We will be practicing for Mass! If your child has the welcome or petition, please encourage them to practice over the weekend. Just a reminder for Mass day - there is NO photographing or video-taping during Mass. This is a celebration of the greatest focus of our Catholic faith. All are welcome!
Reading: We will be reading Diary of a Spider by Doreen Cronin and looking at Cause-Effect situations. We will be using spelling words with the long vowels o, u, and e. With Science we will be writing our essays for the animal project. Remember, costumes need to be worn on October 26th for Halloween!
Math: We will be taking our Chapter 11 test and returning to Chapter 3. This is on basic addition and subtraction facts so please be practicing the flashcards on a regular basis. They must know their basic facts. If you need to, please reference the sheet that was provided in first grade for second grade preparation: what_you_need_for_2nd_grade.pdf
Social Studies: We will be assessing our understanding of Urban, Suburban, and Rural Areas. They did a great job on their Landform foldable which you saw at conferences! (Thank you for coming!)
