Hi everyone!
I hope everyone had a wonderful break! We are off to a great start in the New Year!
Writing:
Before break we started working on cursive! The kids are extremely nervous to begin this new venture, but they will pick up on it quick. According to research Cursive writing, specifically, is beneficial in these five ways:
1. Once letter formation is learned, cursive writing is faster than printing, and for many students it’s faster than keyboarding.
2. The connected letters in cursive result in increased writing fluency (speed and smoothness). The flow of cursive means your pen — along with your thoughts — doesn’t stop moving.
3. This characteristic of cursive writing is shown to be especially beneficial for many struggling learners with processing speed deficits or language difficulties like dyslexia and dysgraphia. Cursive writing also results in fewer letter reversals, which are common with dyslexics.
4. Cursive writing leads to better spelling, because words are visualized as units rather than separate strokes.
5. The ability to read cursive gives you access to many primary sources (i.e. the Constitution) that are written in cursive. That’s a lot of history that you’ll miss out on if you can’t read cursive.
Reading:
Ms. McKenna is still working on the Journey’s series. The kids will be starting their next story. Click Clack Moo. In our class we have begun comparing and contrasting Cinderella stories. We are currently reading Just Ella. A story about what happens after Cinderella goes to the ball and moves into the castle. We also began our Author Study! We are studying Eric Carle and his unique way of bringing stories to life with his illustrations. We worked together to write a story and will be using STEM to bring it to life. Keep an ear out for more on this cool project!
Math:
We are beginning Chapter 7. Money and Time. This Chapter starts by studying coins and counting money. Please help out at home by having children use change. In a world where it is easier to use a debit card then get out cash, please make the effort to help your kiddos out. The more practic4e they have the better! We are also asking that you have an analog clock somewhere in the house. This chapter can be very challenging for students because they don’t have the exposure. If you have any questions about this please email me!
Science:
We have officially wrapped up our unit on Ecosystems. Your kids have learned so much about the natural world this year. They look forward to showing you their projects at the open house at the end of January!
Religion:
The students just took home the first half of the year’s textbook which means its time to start first communion prep. We will using the Blessed series to begin this prep. You can find about more information on the sacraments by visiting our sacraments page.
If you have any questions please contact me! We are going to have a great year!
