"God will certainly provide for all our needs...Christian hope, in fact, finds its root not in the attraction of the future, but in the security of what God has promised us and made in Jesus Christ." - Pope Francis
As we look into the future months of second grade, let us remember that all we do for these students is done together and for the love we share for God and one another as Christians. We are entering some of the most important months in your child's faith formation. First Communion is only a few months away. I promise, that I will cherish this special time with your children and do the best that I can to prepare their hearts and minds for receiving Jesus in the Eucharist.
Welcome back!
January 3-4
We enjoyed swapping stories about what we did over break and were ready to get back into the school schedule. I hope everyone had a blessed and relaxing break. It was so nice to see everyone! In Religion we read The Quiltmakers Gift and made "My Gift to Jesus" "quilt"-boxes. The virtue of the month for January is fidelity, so we also talked about Noah and God's promise to creation. We made 2019 promises that are on the wall outside of our classroom.
January 7-11
Religion: We celebrated The Epiphany and began our next Blessed textbook. Currently, we are in review over previous concepts from before Reconciliation. It is so important that they learn to connect prior knowledge to First Communion. Our journey to the greatest feast ever has begun!
Reading: We read Click, Clack, Moo and returned to our usual Reading Groups. We worked on drawing conclusions, character feelings/actions/words, and compound sentences in writing/grammar. The test will be on the 16th.
Math: We wrapped up Chapter 5 and will be testing on the 14th. Even though we have finished this chapter on subtraction, please continue to practice adding/subtracting with regrouping - focus on two digit numbers. We will return to this in Chapter 6 in the spring and add in another number.
Social Studies: We reviewed our Family Trees with Mrs. Kallenberg. These looked great and I hope you had some fun finding out your history!
January 14-18
Religion: We will be dipping into our new book and working on a Project Based Learning activity - that will be ready for you to see at Open House on January 27th! I don't want to reveal any surprises, so you'll have to come and see what they create!
Reading; We are testing on Click, Clack, Moo and beginning our next story, My Name is Gabriela. This is a simple story about writing and poetry. The students will be working on a paper for Catholic Schools week as well.
Math: We are testing on Chapter 5 and beginning Chapter 7 - Money and Time. Please pull out your coins and ANALOG clocks at home and have your child help you count the coin amounts or make change. 2M has created some awesome little shops during indoor recesses. I love seeing their creativity and imagination as they cooperated on their own to build classroom community. I had no part in this! They were VERY excited when I told them that they could start "selling" their goods at recess using our money manipulatives - which will be used in class as well. Start looking at telling time on an analog clock as well.
Social Studies: We are continuing with the theme of family as we read our next magazine, Family Histories. Here we will be looking at Timelines too. Students will be creating timelines of their lives and also exploring those of famous Americans like Martin Luther King Jr., the Wright Brothers and Helen Keller. (We'll look more into Helen Keller in about 3 weeks!)
*We'll also be picking up Science again over the next few weeks. We'll be discussing Matter, Forces, Magnets and Energy.
